Red Dog or Pointeure

General information

Red Dog is a card game that is offered in casinos around the world. Established in the USA around 1900. Red Dog is also known as Acey-Deucey or In Between.

Players in Red Dog are often called Pointer. 52 cards are used for it. When the dealer shuffles the cards, the player picks up a portion of the stack. Then the dealer places piles of cards. Players place bets and the dealer deals 2 cards. He sets them in the middle of the table. They apply to all players. The order and value of the cards is just like in classic poker

If two cards are a pair, e.g. 2-2 or 6-6, then the dealer must draw the third card. If this leads to the discovery of the triole, the player can fight for an 11: 1 victory, meaning to hit three cards of the same suit. If this combination is not played, the game is counted as a draw and each player receives his bet back

If two drawn cards follow each other, the next card will not be drawn and the game will end with a draw. This applies, for example, to combinations of 2-3 or 9-10. As is always scored high, so the A-2 combination is treated differently.

Most often, however, it does not have any of the first two options. The cards then have the so-called “spread”. This is the difference between the two card values. In the case of combinations 4-8, the spread is e.g. 3, and at 2-5 spread is 2. The largest spread is 2-A and is 11. The name “Acey-Deucey” refers to this situation. If the spread is played with the first cards, all players can raise their bets in the next round of betting. This increase is usually the doubling of the initial bet. However, there are also online variants where you can, for example, put up half. The dealer then draws the third and final card and places it in the centre of the table.

Players only win when the value of the last card falls between the values of the first two cards, i.e. within the spread. This is where the term “In Between” comes from, for example when 5 and 9 are on the table, the player with 6, 7 and 8 wins. With every other number, the casino wins and all bets placed are lost.

The withdrawal amount depends on the spread. The smaller it is, the bigger the win is if the matching card is pulled out. Spread 1 is paid in a ratio of 5: 1, spread 2 – 4: 1, spread 3 – 2: 1 and spread 4 or higher is rewarded with a 1: 1 ratio.

There is no point in placing a raise on small spreads. Only with a spread of 7, the raise pays off. All other raises increase the already existing bank edge and reduce the chance of winning.

Chances of winning

Red Dog is a game of chance, on which the result we have a very small impact. Even if you use the optimal strategy, the casino advantage is at least 2.7 percents. When using 8 cards, such as in some American casinos, the advantage of the bank increases anyway. Even if one deck is used, the player is still in a worse situation anyway. This means that in the long run he always leaves the table as a loser.

Red Dog is a universal card game, but it is not the most popular. The main reasons are primarily a simple structure, a small impact on the game and a relatively poor chance of winning. However, there has been a kind of Red Dog renaissance in online casinos. As with other card games that have fallen out of fashion in a traditional casino, Red Dog finds many new players online. Perhaps simple rules are the key to online success. What bores an experienced casino user can be extremely attractive especially for novice players.
